In addition to a standard eye examination, Silmäasema offers tailored eye examinations for different needs, including age-related eye examinations, sports-related eye examinations, and OCT examinations. At Silmäasema, an eye examination by an optician is free when buying glasses.
You should consider booking an eye examination if:
Regular eye examinations are an important part of maintaining good vision and eye health at different stages of life. If you wear glasses, an eye examination is recommended approximately every two years. An examination for the early signs of age-related changes in vision usually becomes relevant at around the age of 40–45.
During an eye examination, the optician assesses how well you see at different distances and whether your vision has changed. They will also determine which type of vision correction best supports your everyday needs.
After the examination, you will receive a prescription for glasses and recommendations for suitable vision correction.
When you visit Silmäasema, information about your appointment is recorded in our patient information system and transferred to MyKanta. For this reason, we check the identity of customers attending an eye examination.

OCT imaging helps identify structural changes in the eye and monitor eye health.
At Silmäasema, OCT examination results are always interpreted by an ophthalmologist, and you will receive a written report.
At Silmäasema, an eye examination and an age-related eye examination performed by an optician are free for customers purchasing glasses. If you do not purchase glasses at the time of your appointment, the normal price of the examination will be charged.
If you do not purchase glasses straight away, you pay the normal price for the eye examination, and the amount will be deducted from the price of your glasses when you purchase them later.
If you suspect that your child is having difficulty seeing, it is a good idea to have their vision checked. Vision problems may show as difficulty reading, squinting, headaches or difficulty concentrating.
An eye examination for a child over 8 years of age can be carried out by an optician. The examination assesses visual acuity and eye function and determines whether the child needs glasses.
At Silmäasema, children under 8 years of age always have their first eye examination with a paediatric ophthalmologist. After the initial examination, eye assessment and vision care are carried out in collaboration between an ophthalmologist and an optometrist.
You can also visit an optician for an eye examination with a referral or payment commitment, for example from an ophthalmologist, occupational healthcare provider or school healthcare. The optician will carry out the necessary examinations and determine the prescription for glasses in accordance with the referral.

An eye examination by an optician usually takes about 30–45 minutes. The duration depends on the extent of the examination and whether any additional tests are performed during the appointment.
No referral is required. You can book an appointment directly with an optician without a doctor's referral. If you have a referral from an ophthalmologist or occupational healthcare provider, for example, you can also attend an appointment on the basis of that referral.
If you have received a referral or payment commitment, first check which examination or service it concerns. You can then book an appointment for the appropriate service.
Take your referral with you to the appointment, as referrals are not automatically transferred between different providers.

If you wear contact lenses, please note that you should not wear them during the eye examination. It is best to remove your contact lenses at least two hours before your appointment to help ensure that the examination results are as reliable as possible.
Yes. You can have an eye examination simply to make sure that your current glasses are still suitable, even if you are not experiencing any obvious symptoms.
