During the preliminary examination, we will ensure that your eyes are healthy, and that the surgery is safe for you. Among other things, we will examine your cornea, intraocular pressure and retina, and determine whether your eyes need correction by examining your vision. Finally, the ophthalmologist will plan the most suitable procedure for your eyes with you.

When you arrive at the eye hospital, you will be given a sedative. Anaesthetic eyedrops are used during surgery, so it’s painless. Surgery on one eye takes a total of 5–15 minutes, but the actual laser procedure only takes 30 seconds.

After the surgery, you will remain at the eye hospital for about an hour so that we know everything is in order.
Before you go home, your ophthalmologist will ensure that you are feeling well. At home, you should rest with your eyes closed for a few hours until your vision begins to clear.
Recovery usually takes a few hours to a few days, and you will normally need two days off work – the day of the surgery and the following day.

Silmäasema’s surgery guarantee ensures that you’re satisfied with the outcome of your eye surgery, and that the refractive target agreed with the ophthalmologist is achieved. The two-year guarantee covers repeat surgery when it’s medically justified.
The first follow-up examination is usually scheduled 4–6 weeks after surgery. The ophthalmologist who performed the laser surgery usually performs this follow-up examination. During the visit, the success of your surgery and recovery will be assessed.
A final examination is performed by an optometrist about six months after the surgery to check the condition of your eyes.

The total cost of laser surgery consists of the preliminary examination, the surgery, the follow-up examinations, and the office and Kanta fees. The type of surgery (ASA/PRK, Femtolasik/SMILE) you and your ophthalmologist opt for during the preliminary examination will affect the total price.

SMILE (Small Incision Lenticule Extraction) is the newest laser eye surgery technology. The procedure is carried out using a femtosecond laser without a surgical blade, and no flap is created in the cornea. The eye’s surface isn’t lasered; instead, the correction is made in the tissue beneath the cornea.
SMILE is a modern option for correcting short-sightedness, and now also for long-sightedness. SMILE surgery is also suitable for correcting mild presbyopia using the monovision method, especially for short-sighted patients.
In this procedure, the eyes are corrected differently from one another: one eye is corrected for distance vision and the other for near vision. Treatment for long-sightedness delays the symptoms of presbyopia, but lens replacement surgery may be a better corrective option for people over 40.
SMILE surgery is gentler and therefore a particularly good method for active athletes, for example. After SMILE surgery, dry eye occurs less frequently. Vision is significantly better the next day, and continues to improve gradually day by day. You will need to be away from work for the day of the surgery and the following day.

FemtoLasik® eye surgery uses a laser to make a flap on the surface of the cornea. The flap is opened, and the vision is corrected. FemtoLasik® surgery is a popular laser surgery technique, and ophthalmologists have extensive experience performing it with many successful outcomes. FemtoLasik® is ideal for both long-sighted and short-sighted patients. FemtoLasik® surgery is also suitable for correcting mild presbyopia with the monovision method. In this procedure, the eyes are corrected differently from one another: one eye is corrected for distance vision and the other for near vision.

ASA surgery is a modern version of the method previously known as PRK or Flow. ASA is suitable for correcting slight short-sightedness, or if no other technology is possible (e.g. if you have a thin cornea or FemtoLasik®, or SMILE eye surgery has already been performed).
During ASA eye surgery, surface cells are removed from the eye to perform laser eye surgery. The recovery period is a little longer after ASA eye surgery. Your eyes may feel sore for a few days until new cells have grown on the surface. Your vision will be blurry for a week, after which it will slowly return to normal.
ICL surgery is an effective option for correcting pronounced short-sightedness, or if your cornea is too thin for FemtoLasik® or SMILE laser surgery. In ICL surgery, an extra lens designed for you is inserted in the eye. It can be used to correct short-sightedness, long-sightedness and astigmatism.
During lens replacement surgery, the eye’s own lens is replaced completely with a new artificial one. An artificial lens can be monofocal, astigmatism-correcting or multifocal.
Lens replacement surgery is especially recommended for people over 45, as it is also suitable for correcting presbyopia. If necessary, it can be supplemented by laser eye surgery.
