First fitting of contact lenses

Start wearing contact lenses with a first fitting

During the first fitting, you will learn how to handle contact lenses and receive instructions on how to care for them. At the end of your appointment, you will be given trial lenses to take home so that you can practise wearing contact lenses.

Around 2–3 weeks after the first fitting, you will have a follow-up appointment to make sure your eyes are healthy and that you can see clearly with your contact lenses. Once you are comfortable handling your contact lenses, you will receive a contact lens prescription.

The first fitting of contact lenses costs €35.

Please note that if your current glasses prescription is more than a year old, you should first book an eye examination with an optician and then a first fitting of contact lenses.

What happens during a first fitting of contact lenses?

First, the optician will examine your eyes using a microscope to make sure there are no reasons why you should not wear contact lenses.

After the examination, the optician will select the contact lenses that best suit your eyes and your needs. You will get to try the lenses and practise handling them, including how to take a contact lens out of its packaging, put it in your eye and remove it. You will also receive contact lens care instructions, including how to clean and store your lenses.

Finally, the optician will check that the contact lens fits your eye properly.

After the first fitting, you will be given suitable contact lenses to take home so that you can practise wearing them. Around 2–3 weeks later, you will have a follow-up appointment. The optician will ask how you have been getting on with your contact lenses, check how well you can see with them and make sure they still fit your eyes properly. Once you are comfortable using them, you will receive a contact lens prescription.
