Book an appointment for a surgery assessment
During the preliminary examination, the operating surgeon will examine your eyes. Together, you can plan the most suitable surgery, and the ophthalmologist will determine the strength of your artificial lens.
The new artificial lens can replace your current near-vision, distance or progressive glasses. You can always have surgery without waiting, usually within 2–3 weeks of the preliminary examination. Read more about the preliminary examination.
You will spend 2–3 hours at the eye hospital and the lens replacement surgery will only take 15–20 minutes. The surgery is performed while you lie comfortably.
Anaesthetic eyedrops are used, making the lens replacement surgery almost painless. During the surgery, the ophthalmologist will tell you about the most important steps.
For the best surgical result, we recommend treating dry eye before surgery.
After the surgery, you can go home in about an hour. Your vision will improve immediately and become clearer over the next few days. You will be given the phone number of the ophthalmologist who performed the surgery in case you have any questions.
Your eyes may feel slightly irritated or sensitive to light for a few days. Use the eyedrops your ophthalmologist prescribes as directed, usually four times a day for three weeks. You can resume normal activities such as reading and going outdoors as early as the day after the surgery. Silmäasema’s surgery guarantee ensures that you’re satisfied with the outcome of your eye surgery, and that the refractive target agreed with the ophthalmologist is achieved. The two-year guarantee covers repeat surgery when it’s medically justified.
If you need temporary glasses after surgery, we recommend waiting before purchasing permanent glasses while your eyes are still healing. In this case, you can buy affordable temporary glasses from our store, with a delivery time of only about 2–3 days. An optician can prescribe lenses for these glasses if authorised by an ophthalmologist. The deposit for the glasses you bought will be refunded when you purchase your actual glasses subsequent to the follow-up examination.
The follow-up examination is usually scheduled 4–6 weeks after the surgery. The ophthalmologist who performed your surgery usually performs the follow-up examination. The success of the surgery and recovery are assessed. In addition, an optometrist checks the condition of your eyes at a final examination about six months after surgery. All entries recorded in the patient information system are also transferred to MyKanta.
During lens replacement surgery, the eye’s natural lens is completely removed, so cataracts cannot develop. However, the capsular bag surrounding the lens is preserved, as it’s the best place to insert the artificial lens. The capsular bag may become cloudy and cause cataract-like symptoms. This can be detected during the follow-up examination. This is called posterior capsule opacity or a secondary cataract, and it’s treated with a laser at an appointment with an ophthalmologist. The procedure only takes a few minutes, and the eye will recover by the following day. There’s no need to change glasses after the procedure.
The total cost of lens replacement surgery consists of the preliminary examination, the surgery, follow-up examinations, and office and Kanta fees. The type of surgery (monofocal or multifocal) you and your ophthalmologist choose during the preliminary examination will affect the total price.

Before lens replacement surgery, a preliminary examination must be carried out, during which the surgery is carefully planned with the operating surgeon. You can get access to surgery without queueing, and you can choose the operating surgeon, as well as the place and time of the surgery yourself.
You and your ophthalmologist will decide whether your lens replacement surgery will be performed with a monofocal or multifocal lens. The price for monofocal lens replacement surgery includes a special lens that corrects near or distance vision, and astigmatism if necessary. Lens replacement surgery with a multifocal lens replaces the eye’s own lens with a multifocal lens – if necessary, with correction for astigmatism. Surgery prices are shown below.
