During a preliminary eye surgery examination, we make sure that the procedure you want is suitable for your eyes and safe for you. An ophthalmologist and an optometrist carry out a thorough examination of your eyes at Silmäasema’s eye hospital.
The preliminary examination provides a comprehensive overview of your vision and eye health. It includes accurate measurement of refractive error, as well as a thorough assessment of your eye health, including careful examination of the cornea and fundus. In addition to corneal topography and biomicroscopy examinations, we perform OCT imaging (optical coherence tomography of the retina) if necessary. We also take measurements using advanced IOLMaster®, VERION™ and Argos® devices.
Based on the tests, your vision needs and your lifestyle, the ophthalmologist will recommend the best surgical method for you, as well as an individual lens solution if you are going to have lens or cataract surgery. If you have questions or concerns about the procedure, the ophthalmologist will be happy to answer them. If you wish, we can book a surgical appointment for you at the end of the preliminary examination.
The preliminary examination costs €200, and it is performed for everyone considering laser surgery, lens surgery or cataract surgery.* The price includes an office fee and a Kanta fee; in addition, a Kela reimbursement of €8 may be available for the ophthalmologist’s share. The preliminary examination does not commit you to any further treatment. Please note that the ophthalmologist’s and optician’s appointments may take place on separate days.
About nine out of ten people who attend the preliminary examination can undergo eye surgery. If surgery is not recommended, we will work together to find the best vision solution for you.

The duration of the preliminary examination depends on the required tests, but it is advisable to set aside between one and two hours for the appointment. Please do not drive to the examination, as you may be given pupil-dilating eyedrops that temporarily blur your vision.
Contact lenses should not be worn for a week before the preliminary examination, and eyelash extensions should only be planned for after the examination and surgery. We recommend using lubricating eyedrops for 1–2 weeks before a preliminary examination or surgery, especially if you have dry eye symptoms.
Please bring information about your current glasses and contact lenses, as well as sunglasses if necessary. Bring your Kela card to the appointment. The ophthalmologist’s fee for the preliminary examination is eligible for reimbursement by Kela.
*If you have received a referral from an ophthalmologist for cataract surgery within the last 6 months, and you have no preferences regarding a special lens, you can be scheduled directly for surgery. If you have a referral from an ophthalmologist for cataract surgery or a request for a special lens that has been issued within the last 12 months, you will only pay €100 for the preliminary examination.
