You can order almost all the sunglasses sold at Silmäasema with your own prescription. Our in-store eyecare professionals will help you select both the right frames and the sunglass lenses that meet your individual needs. Coatings and lens tints finish the sunglass lenses according to your wishes for vision correction, hobbies and preferences.
When you need vision correction, you can choose prescription sunglasses, contact lenses and non-prescription sunglasses, or cover sunglasses – sunglasses that go over your regular glasses. Single vision sunglasses are ideal for summer outdoor activities and as reading glasses on the beach.
With progressive prescription sunglasses, you can go about your entire day without switching between glasses and sunglasses. They are the most convenient solution when driving, for example, when you want to have a clear view of both the road and surroundings, as well as the car’s gauges.
One option is photochromic lenses, which combine both sunglasses and glasses in the same frames. However, photochromic lenses are not suitable for driving, as the car’s windscreen UV protection prevents the lenses from reacting to the level of light.
Coatings enhance both the functionality and style of sunglasses. Almost all sunglass lenses sold at Silmäasema feature 100% UV protection from incoming light through the front of the lens and an anti-reflective back surface as standard.
Their service life is extended by a hard coating that prevents scratches caused by beach sand or stones flying up when you’re cycling, for example. Our best sunglass lenses also include a dirt-repellent and anti-static coating for easier cleaning.
You can customise your lenses’ combination coating to suit how you use your sunglasses. Polarisation is an important addition, at least for sunglass lenses for drivers and boaters. Other additional features include thinning that improves comfort, as well as an elegant gradient tint.
Polarisation in sunglasses eliminates horizontal reflections, reducing glare when the sun is shining on the surface of the water or on wet roads, for example. When you’re fishing, it helps you see under the water. Polarisation also sharpens vision and enhances contrasts. Eight different tints are available.
Mirror coating is one of the most effective ways to protect your eyes in particularly bright conditions – when you’re in the mountains, on a ski slope, crossing the ice or on sun-drenched beaches. There are eight lens tints to choose from, so sunglasses with mirror lenses are also good for highlighting a personal look.
Thinned sunglass lenses are lighter and more comfortable than standard lenses. The need for thinning usually goes hand in hand with stronger prescriptions. Silmäasema’s sunglass lenses are available with single or double thinning – with refractive indices of 1.6 or 1.67.
Gradient lenses bring style and elegance to sunglasses. Lenses that lighten from the top protect your eyes from UV radiation as effectively as fully tinted sunglass lenses. Gradient lenses brighten up the look and are at their best when you choose a shade that matches your sunglasses’ frames.
The colour and tint of sunglass lenses aren’t just a matter of appearance. Some lens colours are better in clear weather, others in cloudy weather. Colour also affects sunglasses’ contrast sensitivity.
There are clear recommendations for choosing the tint of sunglass lenses. Depending on the intended use, the most common sunglass tints are 75% or 85%, meaning the lenses transmit 25% or 15% of the light. A 90% tint is ideal for very bright conditions such as on glaciers. You mustn’t drive when wearing sunglasses that transmit so little light.
The most common colours for sunglass lenses are grey, green and brown, but many more exotic options are also available. You’re welcome to ask about the options in-store!
When you’re wearing brown sunglasses, you can see your surroundings clearly, even in cloudy weather. That’s why they’re suitable for those who drive a lot. Brown sunglass lenses are a good choice for golfers, as they enhance colour contrasts and highlight variations in surface textures.
Grey is perhaps the most popular lens colour for sunglasses. Grey sunglasses effectively protect your eyes in bright conditions, so they’re particularly suitable for boaters and water sports enthusiasts. The neutral tone shows the colours of the environment very realistically.
Green sunglass lenses sharpen vision and enhance contrasts, making them popular with tennis players and golfers. Grey-tinged shades of green reproduce colours at their most authentic. They help you distinguish between areas of light and shade during spring skiing, for example.
